Deadly Cool Gemma Halliday Books

I fell in love with this book!!!! I stayed up until four reading this, and then I had to finish it as soon as I woke up. This book was not what I was expecting at all. It even had me cracking up in several parts. I loved this romance/mystery novel.

Hartley hears rumors that her boyfriend is cheating on her with the president of the Chastity club, Courtney. She ends up finding an opened condom wrapper in his locker. Hartley and Sam, her best friend, head to Josh's house. They break in and find Courtney dead. Josh is the lead suspect for the murder, but no one has seen him except Hartley. She agrees to prove that he is innocent even though he is a cheating loser. Then Chase comes into the picture. Yum is all I have to say. I am totally crushing on him. Even Hartley starts realizing how tall dark and gorgeous he is. Chase is the editor of the school newspaper. He wants the exclusive story so Hartley, Sam and Chase set out to find the killer.

Deadly Cool was a very quick read. It was fast-paced and action packed from the beginning to the end. Once I started it, I didn't want to put it down. I can't wait to read Social Suicide when it comes out in April!!! I am hoping to see a lot more swoon worthy moments with Hartley and Chase!!!

Deadly Cool Gemma Halliday Books Reviews

Who’s killing the members of high school color guard team? Hartley and Chase are investigating. Chase is the editor of the high school online newspaper. Hartley is trying to prove her ex-boyfriend didn’t do it. Lots of twists and high jinks. Great author. Recommend.
Poor Hartley! Her boyfriend cheated on her and now he wants her to help clear his name?! UHH, let's just say she's a lot nicer than I would have been!

WHERE has this sub-genre been hiding! Murder Mystery with not a speck of paranormal or supernatural to be found. Hartley is a modern day Nancy Drew (I thought this before it's actually said in the book!). And she's sarcastic, witty, funny, and she is trying to prove her cheating ex-boyfriend is innocent so you know she's a nice girl.

I've been looking for a book like this for a while. I devoured it and loved playing Who Done It along with Hartley, CHASE (baddd boyyy), and Sam. I'll definitely be picking up the sequel, Social Suicide, which comes out in April.

PS - I know vegans are stereotypically "weird" and "hippy", but I would love to see a book where "vegan mother" is not synonymous with "kooky". (I'm vegan and hopefully not as kooky as vegans come off in books) Oh, also! Soy cheese is not vegan kosher as it has Casein in it.
Another great book that had me at the first sentence. "There are three things you never want to find in your boyfriend's locker a sweaty jockstrap, a D minus on last week's history test, and an empty condom wrapper." On page one we are sucked into Hartley's drama filled world, and it never lets up. This book is unputdownable. Much to my surprise, it's actually very humorous. The plot is creepy and serious, but it has just the right touch of funny that gives it a lighter feel. The author even came up with a creative way to censor the language...and it works!

I love Hartley and all her sarcasm. And the way she lists off her options using A and B. I didn't know how I was going to feel about her helping her boyfriend, considering he cheated on her, but she wouldn't be Hartley if she had handled it differently. She's a very take charge, cut the crap, brave character (and did I mention she's hilarious?). Then there's Chase. I can't resist a good, bad boy. Chase alone would be enough reason to desperately want to read the second book; I've gotta have more of him.

But it's not just Chase that I want more of - it's all of it. The characters, the plot, the irony, the laugh out loud moments, the creepy stuff...just everything. I have absolutely nothing negative to say about Deadly Cool at all. I was flying through the pages and simultaneously trying to slow down, not wanting it to end. Can't wait to read Social Suicide (book two)!

As a side note, I adore this cover! Those earbuds make absolute, freaky sense now.
I have a thing for snarky main characters. I picked up Deadly Cool because everyone was talking about how snarky our main character Hartley is and she was! Hartley had one hell of a sense of humor!

Deadly Cool didn't evoke too many emotions out of me, it was more like one of those sit-on-your-porch-drink-lemonade-in-the-summer kind of books (except I don't have a porch, but still...). It's full of wit, a ton of humor and characters that you wish were real so you could befriend them on MySpace right now. The plot while it wasn't too serious was still fun and the mystery behind who was in on all the killings were enough to keep you turning the pages.

As I mentioned, the characters were all fantastic. Hartley was snarky and determined to clear her ex boyfriend's name. I get she still cares about him and all (maybe) but still, the guy shouldn't had been asking for her help. I mean we're all convinced he's cheating on Hartley, he just looks bad in this situation and he should get a freakin clue. But if he wasn't guilty (like he says) then why is he hiding? That part made no sense to me really. And why hasn't Hartley cussed him out yet? Please believe if I saw what she saw he wouldn't hear the end of it! Hartley's best friend Sam was the perfect sidekick for Hartley and Chase, even though I had my doubts about him was pretty snazzy himself. I think he cares about Hartley, it's cute.

Also I'm convinced that the author lives in San Jose because as someone who was born in Silicon Valley, the mall she describes in the book is word for word. Also the street names. It's crazy. But nice when Silicon Valley gets some attention too!

If you're looking for a laid back and funny read this summer, I would definitely recommend Deadly Cool!
I haven't read anything this light and fun in a long time. I already got a laugh out of the summary when I read that she found out her boyfriend was cheating on her with the president of the Chastity Club. The entire book continues in this vein, and it is a frothy confection of somehow relatable absurdity. I never imagined that a murder mystery could be this much breezy fun.
