A Game of Thrones The Graphic Novel Volume One Daniel Abraham George R R Martin Tommy Patterson 9780440423218 Books

Well, this was super fun!

Have only read the first novel....A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE....but have seen the entire HBO series....and am hooked. Do believe I'll finish reading the series in graphic form as George R. R. Martin makes it clear in the preface that the graphic form is not a tie-in to the TV series, but an original adaptation to his novels. Am excited to find out the storyline differences! He also explains it's why the characters do not look like the actors on our flat screens.

Tyrion Lannister (midget) to Jon Snow (bastard)..........."Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you."

Wonderfully illustrated.....and a nice refresher of how it all began!

Note: Note for children.

A Game of Thrones The Graphic Novel Volume One Daniel Abraham George R R Martin Tommy Patterson 9780440423218 Books Reviews

Whether or not you have been following the TV show, you will enjoy this graphic novel---it's well written, expertly drawn and colored, and filled with all of the weird characters that George Martin has populated his seven kingdoms. As a matter of fact, this would give any aficianado a refresher on what is going on in the series.
The first volume of this graphic novel covers Chapters 1-23 from the book A Game of Thrones. Those who haven't read the books and have only seen the show will notice some detours in plot. Those who have read the books should be pleased with the adaptation.

In terms of adapting the story to a graphic novel format I think Daniel Abraham has done well. He hits all the major points of the plot and much of the dialogue used is directly from the book. I've heard quite a few complaints about the drawing. Granted, a few of the characters could have stood to have more defining features to distinguish between them more easily. However, while not exactly inspired the drawing was hardly detrimental to the overall quality of the book. But I've always been one to appreciate the quality of the writing and the story over the quality of the art - not everyone may share my opinion on that.

I purchased this book in the format for my 7" Fire HD. As far as the volume's content on the Fire - I was hesitant to abandon the volumes in print worried that the Fire might provide a more difficult viewing experience. That hasn't turned out the be the case. The novel is easy to read, you can scan in to specific boxes, and the colors are vibrant.
The graphic novel is, or course, absolutely fantastic from the Art and Story lines both. Unfortunately, the constant nee to zoom in and out and the cludgy way of progressing through the wonderful story, really severely distracted from the tale itself. I love everything that TV has done with the wonderful tale. But this unfortunate attempt at presenting the graphic Novel. was not the best that could have been done. I still love the tale and am a devoted fan of the author.
I watched the HBO series before I knew anything of the book. My biggest problem was keeping track of all the individual characters. Reading this story in a graphic novel fashion really helped me with this as I was able to jump back & forth pages following & reinforcing the characters I seem to forget. The artwork is well done and the story moves quite along, just like the television series. If you like the show, or just want to view this story in a different media - you can't go wrong with the graphic novel versions. As soon as I finished this book, I proceeded to order Volume II. Sidenote I was able to get a very nice used edition for half the price and feel it is well worth it. A good way to get into GOT with little $ invest.
The Short
This was just another way that I could fall in love with this series. There was a lot more backstory and histories than I noticed when I read the actual book that this was adapting. I had a very good time reading this book, and I'm very glad that I did end up picking it up.

The Good

I really liked how each of the characters were depicted. They were very different from how the TV show characters looked, and they were more true to the descriptions that were given in the original books. I really appreciated how the artist did that.
The authors did a very good job adapting the story, and knowing what to take away without losing the details. The pictures made it so there could be less words, and more of a scenic view of the story that I am already very familiar with.
The pacing of the story was commendable. They could have rushed it and taken out huge passages, or they could have made it so long that EVERYTHING would have been covered, and it would have been like reading the full book all over again. I'm glad that the book was fairly short, and a lot easier to read than the original book.

The Bad
I didn't really have any true problems with this book, but instead I was kind of iffy on how everything was put together. There were not really any clear transitions, and I would have liked that. It was very easy to follow, but I don't think it would have worked out too well if someone hadn't watched the TV show or read the books.
