Loved the book! Written in the 30s it is a Scotsman's take on the craziness of the English, their idiosyncrasies, illogical approaches to life, class system, and general sense of superiority to the rest of the world. Several passage were truly ROFLOL! And, even though we are now 80+ years on, it is the 21st century, another World War has been and done it's deeds upon the English, somehow nothing has changed - perhaps a bit more mellow now with the loss of their vast empire, but still hilarious when you get down and look at them at home, in the pubs on the street corners, the clubs in London, the football stadia in the north, and the huntin' and fishin' in the shires, and what's left of the country homes and weekends away. A great read.Tags : England, Their England (Picador Books) [A. G. a bit strange. I got through it eventually but not sure I'd recommend it to anyone. Not something you could read while multi-tasking
Its just dated. An amusing read.
A very good, very funny book.
The book is well written and an easy read. The story, however, goes nowhere. It reads like a magazine article which, I beleive, is intentional.
One of an excellent series of 16
Loved it! Like a lovely travelogue, a trip back in time. Witty and engaging. A sweet book.
This book is one in a series of 16 books. It is about the Whiteoak family and their Canadian home called Jalna. The family is unique, and the series takes you through several generations. You grow to know and love the family with all its ups and downs... very close to real life for so many. My mother read the series when she was young and brought me to it. I read the series when I was in my twenties and am reading it again in my 70's. It grows on you. Just be sure you read the books in order as it is so much fun to see the members of the family grow up, have successes and failures, marry and divorce, travel, and have adventures on the Jalna property... you rejoice at their successes, and you mourn with the family when members die. I definitely recommend this book and the others in the series. Good wholesome reading.
